Dog Digging
The Reason For Your Dog’s Digging Problem
Dog’s digging can be a problem for you if he keeps on destroying your lawn and garden at home. Dogs dig for many reasons and for some dogs, they dig because of the natural characteristics of their breed. But generally, dogs dig to bury or recover bones or to build dens. For some dogs, they dig because they want to escape due to long period of confinement.
Stop Dog Digging
* If you’re going to be away all day, make sure to provide your dog with plenty of exercises, walks and playtime, and the chances are your dog will be less likely to start digging your garden.
* However, if your dog loves to dig, you can redirect the digging behavior to an appropriate digging place by creating a digging pit for him.
* Bury a dog treat or your dog’s favorite toy in the soil while your dog is watching the preparations. Then call your dog over and say “Dig!” With your assistance, help your dog to retrieve the buried treat in the digging pit.
* Once he gets the idea of retrieving the items in the digging pit without your help, with an enthusiastic tone, praise him lavishly. Repeat this step over and over again until he is familiar with the “Dig!” command.
* Moving on to the next step, bury some dog treats in the pit, and place your dog far away from the pit. Then say, “Dig!” and enthusiastically praise him if he goes to the right place.
* If your dog ever digs at the wrong place, with a firm tone, say “No Dig!” Then, immediately place him at his digging pit and say, “Dig!” Praise him when he starts digging in his pit.
* Practice this training regularly each day to familiarize your dog with the command
