Teach Your Dog To Fetch

There are numerous commands out there to help your dog behave better. However, there is one command out there that is actually designed to help you and your dog to have fun together. The command is fetch; you use this command when you want teach your dog to fetch a stick or ball that you throw.

Many young smaller dogs are ready to go for this command. However if you have an older larger sized dog they might not obey as easily. In many cases the dog will give you the “you threw it you go get it” look.

However, an active dog is a healthy dog, so here are a few tips to help get Fido ready to play fetch. First, get his favorite toy, and then throw it a short distance. Either your dog will run after it or look at you like you are crazy.

If he goes and retrieves the toy then praise him for doing a good job. If the latter happens then you might have to bribe him to get him to comply. If possible, try to avoid treats when you teach your dog to fetch.

Now after you have got to the point your dog will go the short distance, you need to keep this progress up by throwing it farther and farther each time. Each time he returns it is important to give him praise and enforce the point that you are proud of him.

Now it is time to graduate to the rubber ball. This way he is not familiar with just the one toy. As he gets more and more used to you throwing the ball use the fetch command. After all, of the training you and your dog can enjoy playing fetch in the park with a ball or even a Frisbee.
