How to Keep a Dog From Jumping on People
If you own a dog then you have probably came home with an arm full of groceries and had your dog tackle you the moment he saw you. While this is a sign of affection, it can be a mess if your bottle of orange juice breaks on the floor.
Beyond the dangers of having your dog jumping on you, there is the embarrassment factor of having this happen to a guest at your home. Dogs jump to either show affection or to get attention. If you have somebody over who is skittish of dogs this will be very embarrassing for you.
The simple way to teach a dog not to jump is easy When he does it simply push him away. This may seem to be mean, but the last thing you want to do is reward him for this bad behavior. Next, you will want to use the sit command. If you have trained him correctly, your dog will respond immediately to this.
Next, you will want to use the stay command in conjunction with the sit command. These two commands put together will go a long way in getting a dog not to jump up on you or a guest.
If you have not trained your dog either one of these commands, you may want to try using either his favorite chew toy or giving him a piece of rawhide to chew on to keep him occupied. One great thing to do is if you are going to the store is to take a piece of rawhide that has been soaked in soup. When you come through the door, give it to your dog to keep him at bay.
