Teaching your Dog the Come Command
If you and your dog have ever gone to the park to play, then you have probably had him run chasing after something or someone. This can be quite embarrassing to a dog owner, so how do you train your dog to come when you call him.
First, there are a few reasons why the dog may not come when called. For example if they have been given the command and simply ignored it and was never corrected. Maybe he just simply does not know the command. On the other hand, he may know that he is going to have an experience he really does not want to have such as being put in a cage.
So how do you get Fido to come when you call him, one-way is to call him when it is time to let him out to do his business. After he comes to the door to go out make sure he knows you are pleased by giving him praise for coming. After he has done his business, call him again to come inside. Again, it is important to praise him for obeying, always praise him for doing what you tell him to do.
If it is dinner time, again call him to come eat. Praise him when he gets to his bowel and never lose your cool if he takes his time. If your dog is a rescue, you need to take into account that you do not know what trauma he went through before you got him.
It is important to praise your dog when he comes on your command. If however he does not come, you need to be firm but gentle in dealing out punishment. In the end, you will both be rewarded with a healthy relationship.
