How to Keep a Dog from Chewing on your Belongings

If you have ever came home and found you coffee table missing some of its original finish then you know all too well about a dogs chewing problem. There are several methods to prevent a dog from chewing; however before you put an end to his chewing day you need to understand why.

A dog’s natural reaction is to chew. He may chew because he is teething; he may be lonely or even just plain bored. Dogs require attention from their owners, when they do not get this attention; they find ways to get it. Therefore, the question is how you stop your dog from eating all of your stuff in your home.

First, if your dog is teething, get him chew toys that will sooth him while going through this difficult period. If your dog is past the teething stage then you might want to put him in a room that has very little for him to chew on, provide him a selection of chew toys that he can take his emotions out on while not destroying your furniture.

The one thing that you need to remember is to never punish a dog if you do not catch him in the act. Dogs are simple creatures, if you punish him ten minutes after he finished making a snack out of you slippers. The dog will not associate the two together. These are just a couple of ways to prevent your dog from chewing on your household goods; there are other methods out there if these do not work.
