Getting Your Dog to Sit
Teaching a dog to sit is one of the easiest things to do. However, it is also a process that you and the dog need to have patience during. When you tell your dog to sit at first he will probably just look at you funny.
So how do you make your dog sit? The process is actually quite easy. First, you need to remember that a dog’s attention span is short. For this reason, the training lessons need to remain short and fun at the same time.
The first rule is to remember to always use the dogs name with the command. If you have had the dog since he was a puppy then he should know his name by now. Next, you need to be firm in giving the command. This does not mean to scream at him until he obeys. If he does not obey, then just leave it and come back to it later.
Using treats during this process is a good thing at first. After he has begun to listen to you then you will want to slowly wean him off the treats. This way he will do it because he was asked not to get a treat.
If your dog does not want to follow the sit command then you might want to use gentle yet firm pressure to push his rear down. After this has been achieved then reward the dog. This will again instill in him the thought of if I do this I get a reward. Eventually your dog will sit every time you tell him too and maybe even sometimes that you do not.
